A pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by certain medical problems is referred as TMJ. TMJ connects the mandible to the temporal bone in front of the ear. People suffering from temporomandibular joint problems are not sure what causes it but a few pointers can be blamed,
1. Improper braces
2. Stress, poor diet, lack of sleep.
3. Contracted jaw, head and neck muscles which are trigger points. This will take pain to other parts causing toothache, headache and earache.
4. Birth deformities, fractures, dislocations and also arthritis.
The occurrence of TMJ disorders are different in severity and degree. Actual pain of TMJ occurs when you feel pain or loose jaw function. In the morning the pain can be mild as compared to later in the day when it becomes chronic. Loosing function means that it can be a mild stiffness of the jaw or barely opening the jaw at all.Symptoms associated with TMJ disorders may be,
Discomfort in chewing and biting.
A mouth that pops or grants when opening.
A face that aches and its dull.
Pain in the ear.
Headache.
Tenderness of the jaw.
Being unable to open and close the mouth.
There could be need to see more than one specialist if you have TMJ pain like an ENT doctor, a dentist, or even a general physician depending with the symptoms. The TMJ evaluation may be,
Dental evaluation for showing whether you have a bad teeth alignment.
Evaluating of joint and connecting muscles.
Pressing around the head for areas that are sensitive or painful.
Side to side movement of teeth.
Feeling, listening and watching as the jaw opens and shuts.
Looking for abnormalities from x-rays taken.
Your doctor will also need to consider other conditions, such as ear infections or nerve related problems and headaches, as the cause of your symptoms. There are gentle and simple therapies that are first advised.
Your physical therapist should help you out with massaging the muscles around your jaw, relaxing techniques and teach you how to stretch gently.
Avoid actions that cause your symptoms, such as yawning, singing, and chewing gum.
Having cold packs or moist heat on your face will help.
You should have stress reducing techniques at hand. Managing stress emotions at this stage is vital. To help you reduce stress, you could read, listen to music or swim.
While in the shower or bath especially in the morning and before bedtime learn simple exercises of stretching muscles of the jaw and neck in that warm and moist environment.
Moist heat is very helpful for the sore muscles of TMJ. The penetrating moist heat promotes blood flow into the muscle which aids in healing and relaxation of the muscle as well.A wet washcloth with a hot water bottle will do, or you can purchase moist heating pads if you wish.
