Drooling, crankiness and tears can make teething an ordeal for parents and babies' alike. Eight teeth that appear first are flat, thin and sharp and are usually for biting other than chewing which are referred to as incisors. This teeth do not cause a lot if pain because they cut through quite easily. Bigger and broader teeth used for chewing appear in the second year and this are two sets of molars. These teeth have a harder time breaking through the gums. For this reason, they tend to cause more pain than incisors.
It's not easy to take care of a teething toddler. They get irritated and fussy, and you often don't know how to make them feel better. Try a few tips like,
1. Usually, children will get sleep interruption and cry at night due to pain of teething. Motrin or Tylenol is a good reliever for pain especially just before bedtime.
2. By rubbing Oragel for kids on their gums can help in giving relieve. Be sure to push your finger to the side of the mouth and not in the middle to avoid that hard bite.
3. Rubber toys should be within reach at all times for them to chew on. Make sure you have more than one different toy as children get bored easily with the same toy.
4. A very good distraction from teething is outdoor activities like outside walks or going to the park often.
5. As your toddler could be looking for more attention at this time, cuddle or nurse them more often than usual.
6. Drooling all the time is part of the teething process. Make sure you dry the drool. Skin irritation can be prevented by drying your baby's chin with a clean dry cloth while you also make sure your baby sleeps on bed sheets that are absorbent.
7. When your baby cannot sleep because of teething pain, have him sleep on an inclined position. It will ease the discomfort and pain. To create an incline, you can put a pillow under the baby's mattress.
Ointments and lotions that claim to soothe the teething pain should not be used for baby's less than 4 months old at all costs. Choking of the toddler can easily occur because of the numbness that can occur in the throat as the ingredients contained in them might wash out of the mouth in just a few minutes.
Never put alcohol into your baby's mouth. Even if convinced by friends and relatives. It is not in order to use a dab of whisky. Alcohol is dangerous to the health of your baby.
When the two-year molars come out, usually teeth take a break till the 6 year molar and other permanent teeth start showing up. In most cases this brings with them memories of the crankiness and fussiness the child went through as a toddler.
Teething experience can be worse for you than your baby who might not remember a thing about it later. Grab that moment when your baby decides to sleep and take a nap too or look for a way to relax. Just because it is 2 am in the morning, teething won't stop.
